DIY windshield de-icer

A man cleans frozen windshield by scratching, cold morning

A frost-covered windshield is a wintertime hassle that almost everyone has had to deal with at one time or another – and for those in colder climes it can be an everyday occurrence. Scraping the frost away can be time-consuming, and it seems like your windshield is always the frostiest when you’re running late.

But there is a simple remedy that can de-ice your windshield quickly so you can drive away in safety with a clear view through the glass in just a few seconds.

Mix one part water with two parts isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol and pour it into a spray bottle. Spray it on the windshield, and viola, a swipe of your windshield wipers will clear your window of all the frost and you’re ready to get on your way.

Why does it work? Isopropyl alcohol has a freezing temperature of -126.4 degrees Fahrenheit. So it melts the ice away in the worst of temperatures Mother Nature can throw at you.

Here’s a video from meteorologist Ken Weathers that lets you see it in action.
